A while ago I wrote a post about “go to” verses of scripture. The words that you turn to in a pinch or by which you live the current stage of your life.
In the same vein, do you also have a go to prayer?
Sometimes when we need to pray, in fact often in the times when we need to pray most, it’s just too hard to find the words. Perhaps because we’re in a busy, stressful place? Maybe when were tired, tempted, angry or grieving?
Some years ago, I was bought a little book by a friend about the Jesus prayer. I’d never heard of it, much less prayed it but, more times than I can count since then, have found it to be an incredible blessing. For those who don’t know, the Jesus prayer is:
“Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”
There are variations (for example without “a sinner” on the end) but that’s basically it. Easy to remember. Easy to reach for when no other words will come. Easy to repeat over and over to crowd out the mental noise of the world.
The Jesus prayer is my go to prayer without any doubt. It’s so firmly embedded within me that, even without consciously thinking, in times of trouble I find the words running through my mind or forming on my lips.
A simple prayer that always lives in my metaphorical back pocket, but changes my life by it’s simplicity and by always being there when I need it.
Do you have a similar one? I’d love to hear about it.
